Course description    Application    Contact    Course facilitator

Each year the University of Aarhus offers a postgraduate spring-term course on "Approaches to Development". The course is expected to continue in its present format for a number of years ahead. However, at some point in the future it may undergo minor or major changes to allow for further development and generational change.

The main aim of the course is to increase the participants' knowledge of development issues and work within a multidisciplinary context.

The immediate objectives of the course are:

  • to describe the political as well as the private and public institutional frameworks for development assistance and to introduce the objectives of aid, the background to these objectives and the pre-conditions for their implementation

  • to acquaint participants with concepts like 'project cycle' and 'sector program' and with different approaches such as 'blueprint', 'process' and 'participation'.

  • to provide opportunities for students to carry out in-depth studies of selected topics, i.e. by preparing and presenting papers and by reviewing papers presented by fellow students.

The course is intended for students with a clearly documented interest in development work. Applicants must be enrolled at a Danish university or other recognised institution or be studying in Denmark under an exchange programme. Students with a bachelor degree will be given priority.

To get a general impression of the course, you may download the Spring 2011 Course Plan. A detailed course plan for the spring 2012 course will be available on this website in early January 2012.
